Why your marketing team should be more like the cast of The Office

Be inspired by “The Office” for your own marketing team dynamics.

The perfect marketing team should have a unique combination of personalities, just like the famous cast of The Office. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and putting your best foot forward can improve your marketing team dynamics. Work should not feel like work when it comes to digital marketing and creative design, because the moment you stop enjoying yourself, it shows. There will be signs in the content that you create, the websites you design, and the strategies you develop.

If you’ve not yet had the pleasure of watching this funny, heart-warming, brain-scratching, and (at times) relatable series, take this as the sign you need! Our Mint Monkey Digital Lab team has an appreciation for the cast of The Office and everything that they bring to the “desk” table. Learning from the office series will show you how important it is not to take yourself too seriously.

Why we love the following characters from The Office Series:

Michael Scott – Regional Manager
As the regional manager of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company in Scranton, Micheal always shows up for his team and thinks of them as family. Apart from maintaining his self-proclaimed title as “World’s Best Boss”, Michael prioritizes his role as entertainer extraordinaire within the office. Michael doesn’t back down easily and comes out of some of the craziest situations in the most impressive ways. His fundamental nature is caring and loyal, and we admire his passion for leadership and constant efforts to motivate his team.

Dwight K. Schrute – Assistant (to the) Regional Manager
Many of our favourite scenes in The Office series feature one Dwight K. Schrute, assistant (to the) regional manager with a nearly unbreakable obedience to authority. Dwight works best in a controlled environment that has structure and routine and he has an intense disdain for laziness and those who don’t follow the rules. Although Dwight is an intense character, we love his dedication to his work and commitment to his company, and he has a softer side that shines through on occasion.

Jim Halpert – Sales
The office prankster, realist, and voice of reason, Jim is one of the more sensible characters in The Office series. He keeps things light and funny (and sometimes dark and funny) with his pranks, which are almost always directed at Dwight. Nobody can get away with taking themselves or their work too seriously when Jim is around, and an office with a personality like this helps balance things out. When we focus on our own marketing team dynamics, there’s always someone who can calm the team down enough to turn excitement into great results.

Pam Beasley – Receptionist
Pam is the receptionist for the first part of the Office series and later becomes a sales assistant and office manager. She keeps Michael in check and also pursues her passions outside of work. Even though Pam faces some difficult situations during the show, she always manages to pull herself through and come out on top. We love learning from The Office with these words from Pam herself, “Pobody’s Nerfect”. We aren’t perfect but aim to be the best versions of ourselves at work every day.

Some of our favourite quotes from The Office:

“Whenever I’m about to do something, I think, ‘Would an idiot do that?’ and if they would, I do not do that thing.” — Dwight Schrute

“I am about to do something very bold in this job that I’ve never done before: try.” — Jim Halpert

“Me think, why waste time say lot word, when few word do trick?” — Kevin Malone

“I guess I’ve been working so hard, I forgot what it’s like to be hardly working.” — Michael Scott

“I talk a lot, so I’ve learned to tune myself out.” – Kelly Kapoor

“There’s a lot of beauty in ordinary things. Isn’t that kind of the point?” — Pam Beesly

Through all 9 seasons of the office, we see the best and the worst of our favourite characters. Along the way, lifelong (and sometimes unlikely) friendships form between Dunder Mifflin colleagues from The Office. The Scranton branch undergoes many changes but continues to perform well despite it. People grow in their positions and end up where they are meant to be, and work remains (for the most part) fun, interesting, and productive.
