Threads is a trending topic and has taken the social media scene to a new level. But what does it mean for South African marketers and companies?
A big topic in the social media realms over the last week has been Threads, Meta’s newly launched text-based conversion app, which is connected to the Instagram account you log in with. Social media users are quickly becoming adept to the style of Threads, a platform that offers something Facebook and Instagram (other Meta products) does not. It’s all about connecting over shared ideas, common interests, and trending topics.
We know that great meta descriptions get more clicks, and while they do not directly impact your SERPS rankings, they are essential to the success of your on-page SEO efforts. In this blog post, we share some guidelines for the creation of your future meta descriptions.
Also consider that Google doesn’t always use your meta-description but will more likely show it if is well optimized.
What about Twitter?
If Threads is starting to ring a bell, you might find your thoughts landing on Twitter. While not as popular amongst South African marketers and businesses as Facebook and Instagram, Twitter has been the app for sharing the type of content that will now also align well with the Threads app.
Although big local brands have managed successful Twitter campaigns (think Nando’s and FNB), many smaller companies missed the mark early on to become established on Twitter and have shied away in recent years with a focus on the Metaverse and all that it offers and entails. Since Elon Musk took over Twitter in 2022, technical issues and policy changes have made Twitter users step away from the app, while Twitter is also notorious for allowing harassing behaviours. The CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, believes that Threads will be bigger than Twitter in time. As the rival app to Twitter, Threads aims to create a kinder and friendlier platform for its community of users. Mint Monkey Digital Lab are excited to be a part of this experience!
The start of Threads
The hype of this app’s launch built up for 3 months before it officially launched on the fifth of July 2023. In its first hour, there were already 5 million sign ups, and over 100 million sign ups have taken place since it first launched. The fact that Threads can be accessed so easily from existing Instagram accounts contributes to the app’s popularity. It is noteworthy that no other app has experienced growth at such an astounding pace, making Threads the fastest growing in history.
What now as a South African business?
A new app can immediately stop you in your tracks, and may have you wondering if you should be restructuring your content and marketing efforts entirely? The best thing to do now is create your Threads profile (if you haven’t already) and try to generate traffic organically. Threads has not made advertising available to marketers yet, however we’re expecting this feature to be added soon. Threads was created with the vision of enhancing what Instagram does best, through a different style of posting. In the same way as you do on Instagram, you can use this platform to express ideas and other positive content, as well as connect with friends and creators. This includes and goes beyond the profiles that you follow you Instagram.
How to use Threads:
If you already have an Instagram account, getting started with Threads is easy. Download the Threads app and sign in using your Instagram login details. Once in, the app will ask if you want to follow the same accounts you follow on Instagram. The app will recommend profiles for you to follow that it thinks you may relate to. You’re then ready to start enjoying Threads, and like any new app, it will take a little time to get the hang of it and establish your brand accordingly.
We look forward to seeing you on Threads!
