How to write the perfect Meta Description

In the complex world of digital marketing, every element of your online presence should consider the best and most up-to-date approach for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) practices.

A Meta Description is a short piece of HTML on your webpage, which briefly summarises the page content. This description will also make a difference in how your page is seen by search engine crawlers and users. We come across meta descriptions every time we do a Google search – these are displayed as part of the search, and if they make a good impression, you should get more clicks from the popular searches pertaining to your online content. After all, one of the main objectives of SEO is to boost the click-through rate of your organic search results.

We know that great meta descriptions get more clicks, and while they do not directly impact your SERPS rankings, they are essential to the success of your on-page SEO efforts. In this blog post, we share some guidelines for the creation of your future meta descriptions.

Also consider that Google doesn’t always use your meta-description but will more likely show it if is well optimized.

Stay within the Character Limit

When writing your meta description, be mindful of the length. The ideal length is between 100 – 150 characters. This is not a lot of space to work with, so do your best to make a strong impression and describe the page content in a compelling way. Anything longer than the character limit will cut off and won’t read well.

Answer the Question

Most of the time, people use Google to get an answer to a question. Your meta description should be answering potential questions and providing solutions and benefits. This creates value and results in a better click through rate (CTR). Also remember that you’re writing for people and not for search engines and algorithms.

Don’t Duplicate Descriptions

Having multiple pages or posts with the same descriptions are not ideal for SEO. Duplicate descriptions can be flagged by search engines as they are seen as redundant, reflecting low-quality content. This will directly impact how you rank. One of the first things we do in an SEO site audit is identify identical descriptions, title tags and page content.

Engage and Attract Readers

Online visitors will scroll through the top-ranking links for their search and choose the one that algins with their search and engages them. Take the time to create a meta description that reads well and captures your audience’s attention. Avoid copying and pasting a piece of copy from the page relating to the description.

Use this as your opportunity to win over online audiences and get more relevant page visits. These useful tips can help you create compelling and SEO-friendly meta descriptions, for improved CTRs that generate leads.
